RF-4 PHANTOM II
Lauren Motta
Dear Mom, Im having a great time on my field trip to go see the RF-4 Phantom II here is what I have learned so far. This plane would have never taken flight if it weren't for Herman Barkey and McDonnell Douglas. McDonnell manufactured the plane and Herman was in charge of this idea. The plane started to get designed in September 1953. While building the plane in America the workers had to decide what this planes use was. After a while of thinking they decided it would be a Navy fighter plane. They decided the weapon of the plane would be missiles. This plane was the first fighter plane to have only missiles, guns were added in the later models. After the plane was built it was ready to take flight. It entered service in 1961 and is still in service today. Even though this plane is often used in the Navy it still has many other tasks for example, on December 6 1959 it would set the world record for highest altitude of 98,556 feet. Well now I'm going to see the slightly lengthened nose, bye!
